Committed to Being Neighbor to All in Need

The Sisters of Divine Providence join the Sister Servants of the Immaculate Heart of Mary with a Christmas Postcard Campaign in support of migrants. National Migration Week is January 6-12, 2019 and in preparation for that week, the Sisters are “giving voice” by filling out postcards addressed to our U.S. leaders—President, Vice President, and other elected officials.  The postcards call for “1) an end to detention and deportation of immigrants, 2) respect for the human right to migrate [and seek asylum], and 3) an end to the militarization at the border” (Giving Voice, December 10, 2018).

Sister Anita Brenek, CDP, a member of the General Council for the Congregation, is spearheading the effort locally here at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center. Others are encouraged to write their own postcards as they stand in solidarity with migrants, not only in the United States, but throughout the world.

The interfaith National Week of Action for Migrant Justice, December 10-18, initiated the postcard campaign. The week called for persons of all denominations to join in prayer and action. “Respecting the right of persons to migrate,” says Sister Anita, “joins us with the flight of the Holy Family, Jesus, Mary and Joseph, more than 2000 years ago as they fled due to persecution.”

Today, the Sisters have committed “to hear the cry of the poor and immigrants, to be present as neighbor to all in need, and to act with courage and collaborate with others to heal what is broken and celebrate what is good in our world.”  (CDP 2011-2023 Chapter Statement)
