Sister Loretta Liebscher, CDP
November 16, 1927February 13, 2026
Sister Loretta Liebscher, CDP, formerly Sister Mary Alfrancine, was influenced by her music teachers from kindergarten through college to dedicate her life to music. Her love and appreciation for music, along with her grace and talent for playing the piano, live on in the appreciation of music and in the piano and band instruments played by the hundreds of students she taught for over four decades.

Born from the love of her parents, Alfred Liebscher and Franziska Dittlinger, in New Braunfels, Texas, on November 16, 1927, she grew in love and grace with her siblings Maria and Carl. The strongest influence on her vocation occurred during her high school and college years when she attended the Summer School of Catholic Action (CCSA). The Jesuit priests who lead this event convinced her of the value of religious life. Her studies at Our Lady of the Lake College provided her interaction with the institution’s founders, the Sisters of Divine Providence (CDP). Loretta entered the community; formation time was followed by the profession of her first vows on June 22, 1951.

Her ministry as a piano, organ, choir and band teacher placed her at the following schools: in San Antonio, Texas, she taught at St. Martin Hall, St. Anthony School, and Our Lady of the Lake College/University. Other places in Texas included Saints Peter and Paul and the Sisters of Divine Providence Music Studio in New Braunfels, and St. Phillip Catholic School in El Campo. She spent two years at St. Francis Xavier School in Alexandria, Louisiana.

She passed through the door of earthly existence into the fullness of God on February 13, 2026.

Her steady trust in God and love for her Congregation marked her life. She generously shared her love, radiant smile, wisdom and friendship among the Sisters, Associates, and staff of Our Lady of the Lake Convent and with whom she worked over the years at Our Lady of the Lake University. She is loved by her family, friends, former students and her Sisters of Divine Providence.

The Rosary and Wake will be held Sunday, February 15, at 6:00 PM. The Mass of Resurrection will be celebrated Monday, February 16, at 11:00 AM. All services will be in Annunciation Chapel at Our Lady of the Lake Convent Center.

In lieu of flowers, you may wish to make a memorial contribution to the Sisters of Divine Providence, 603 S.W. 24th Street, San Antonio, Texas 78207-4621.
