Free the Babies

Sister Lourdes Leal protesting the detention of babies and mothers by ICESister Lourdes Leal, the contact person for the CDP Advocacy Circle focused on comprehensive immigration reform, does not believe in family detention of those, currently South and Central Americans, seeking asylum in the United States. Rather than receiving a warm welcome and help, thousands of immigrant women and their children are being placed in detention facilities in nearby Karnes City and Dilly, Texas. Sister Lourdes has supported and/or joined the efforts of RAICES, Interfaith Welcoming Committee and others to help the women and children who are released and need assistance in reaching their next destination.

On August 30, 2016, Sister Lourdes joined about 50 other peaceful protesters who gathered in front of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) field office in San Antonio, Texas to say in loud voices, via hand-made posters and in reverent prayer that detention of babies (and their families) must end NOW!” The theme of the gathering was focused on the babies held in these centers and diapers were left in front of the ICE building as gifts for the detained babies. The group waited in vain for an ICE representative to come out and speak or listen to them. All began to leave after about twenty minutes of waiting but left with a sincere hope of impacting the closing of all immigrant detention centers.
